Job Description:

A luxury boutique lodge in the heart of Queenstown is seeking a talented and motivated Sous Chef with strong leadership skills and a refined palate for Modern New Zealand and European cuisine. The ideal candidate will work closely with the Head Chef to ensure a seamless and high-standard dining experience for discerning guests.

You will contribute creatively to the menu, maintain consistency in quality, and help drive innovation within the culinary team. The lodge offers an intimate setting with a focus on fresh, seasonal, and locally-sourced produce.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Head Chef in managing daily kitchen operations
  • Supervise and mentor junior kitchen staff including commis and CDPs
  • Ensure food is prepared and presented to the highest standard
  • Maintain proper hygiene, food safety, and sanitation protocols
  • Oversee ordering, inventory, and stock rotation
  • Participate in menu planning, costing, and recipe development
  • Manage shift planning and support team performance
  • Ensure compliance with local food regulations and lodge SOPs
  • Actively contribute to a positive kitchen culture

Candidate Requirements:

  • Minimum 4–5 years of professional experience in high-end hotels, resorts, or boutique kitchens
  • Sound knowledge of European & New Zealand cuisine
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Excellent understanding of kitchen operations and team coordination
  • Passion for fresh, local produce and farm-to-table concepts
  • Culinary diploma or certification preferred
  • Physically fit and comfortable with long working hours in a fast-paced kitchen
  • Professional attitude with flexibility and commitment to excellence

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary: NZD 65,000 – 75,000 per annum (based on experience)
  • Performance-based incentives may apply
